Finally!

NEVER IN MY LIFE HAVE I FELT SO SATISFIED with my writing! The past few months have been hell to go through. My personal life fell apart and Jeremy and I were faced with some hard choices involving The Shoals. I lost everything in my life, my home of the past 12 years, my relationship, my dog, and my band. It seemed the only real outlet I had for all the depression and emotions that I was feeling was the only thing thats been with me since I was 6 years old. My music. It took all these years and all these struggles to finally make the music I've wanted to make my whole life. I finally understand what it means to truly create something.

The songs that Jeremy and I have been writing have raised the phoenix from the ashes for me. We finally feel like we truly understand what we are doing and what it is we want for The Shoals. We're not doing it because we have people telling us to or paying us to do it. We are doing it because we have to. Because we want to. Its so easy to get bogged down playing other peoples music and living in a van for 7 months. Its so easy to feel destroyed by the business behind music. It has been 5 years since we started this journey and if thats what it took and all the crap we have gone through to get this point, then so be it. It's made us who we are now. I can't wait to get all these songs recorded so we can share them with all of you.

Right now, I am sitting at Broadway Brewhouse in Midtown Nashville, enjoying a beer and listening to all the songs we have written lately. FYI, I suggest the NEW BELGIUM "Mighty Arrow" Pale Ale. Thanks to all the co-writers who have helped us in this direction. Will Claytor, Greg Becker, Jeremy Campbell, Eric Paslay, and Mickey Kelly.

MusiCares

I like how my "Christmas-Bonus" was donated on my behalf this year. But putting all sarcasm aside, it really was for a great cause, MusiCares, and given everything thats been going on in my life, the one thing I have to pull me through anything it seems, is my music. I've just recently discovered a part of myself as a writer that is finally getting a chance to come out, and so far, its my most honest work.

So I can't help but think about all the music that I have really "cared" about lately that has helped spur some creativity deep in my soul. More importantly, they've helped me get through some tough times.

A Short List.
